How to apply to college (in six* easy steps)

*Transfer students can skip to Step 4

Step 1 | Start early

Don’t put off beginning your search! Ask yourself a few questions: What am I looking for in a college? Should it be a public or private school? Does it have a program that I’m interested in studying? How much will it cost?

There are great resources for narrowing down your options. To start, try Niche, College Board and U.S. News & World Report

Step 2 | Get to know LaGrange College

Step 3 | Stay organized

Staying organized means things like marking the various application deadlines on a calendar. Making a list of each school’s application requirements. Do you need to submit SAT or ACT scores? If so, register early for the test and send your scores to the schools you’re applying to. Start writing your application essay and leave yourself time to edit, revise and get feedback from trusted sources. Your essay represents the type of student you are, so you want to put your best foot forward. Be creative!

Step 4 | Review the application requirements

Every institution has slightly different application requirements. Spend some time familiarizing yourself with the various documents and scores that may be necessary to submit with your application.

Step 5 | Apply

You’ve done the work, now submit your application. Don’t forget that most colleges, including LaGrange, will want a copy of your high school transcript. Ask your guidance counselor to send one.

And remember that in addition to enrollment deadlines, many scholarships also have deadlines. The sooner you are able to submit your application, the better.

Follow up by tracking your application. Many schools maintain a private website that alerts you to your application’s status. Reach out to your admission counselor if you have any questions.
